This workshop provides guidance on personal financial management skills with a focus on people with disabilities. People with disabilities, their families, and the professionals who serve them will learn about:

  • How to create and manage a budget tailored to a fixed income, including a sample budgeting tool.
  • Smart ways to build an emergency savings fund, including using tools like ABLE accounts that protect eligibility for needs-based benefits (e.g., Medicaid and SSI).
  • Understanding and managing debt – including effective strategies for reducing and prioritizing debt repayment.
  • Strategies for building or improving credit, including using trusted alternative financing options, which are designed to help people with disabilities access credit and purchase assistive technology affordably.
  • Spotting and avoiding scams, with clear steps to take if you or someone you work with is targeted.
  • Where and how to access financial empowerment and counseling services in your community, as well as practical tools to turn learning into action.

The workshop is led by Erin Waddell and Ce Garrison of the Louisville Metro Office of Financial Empowerment.  Erin leads the Office of Financial Empowerment.  She is the Chair for Bank On Louisville, the Vice-Chair for Louisville Asset Building Coalition Board of Directors, and is a Certified Community Action Professional (CCAP). 

Ce is the City Program Manager for the Louisville Financial Empowerment Center. They are also a certified financial counselor, financial social worker, economic mobility coach, and a Certified Community Action Professional (CCAP).

Continuing education credits are available for credit counselors through the Society for Financial & Career Consulting Professionals (SFCCP) and National Association of Certified Credit Counselors. (The NACCC charges a $50 fee for the CEUs)

Continuing education credits also are available for certified rehab counselors through the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC).
