This workshop provides guidance on personal financial management skills for people with disabilities including budgeting, banking, setting financial goals, and managing debt and credit. It is led by Sarah Gardner, who has been a financial counselor with Apprisen for 25 years. She is an NFCC-certified credit counselor and HUD-certified housing counselor.

This workshop was organized by Gathering Strength, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Louisville, KY. This is the second of a three-workshop series on Financial Empowerment for People with Disabilities. This workshop is about methods that people with disabilities can use to save money without jeopardizing benefits. Discussion includes
1. ABLE accounts that allow saving without jeopardizing means-tested federal benefits like Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI), Medicaid, SNAP, etc.; and
2. Special Needs Trusts, that allow people with disabilities to save funds without jeopardizing social security benefits or Medicaid.
It is led by Carolyn Wheeler, who is a Project Director at the University of Kentucky’s Human Development Institute and a Certified Community Partner Work Incentives Counselor.
